Anyone can do a Treasury without waiting and waiting and timing it to catch a spot. What a silly way to run a treasury, if you can't get on the ride? Anyway, they must have changed it because I made a treasury in about 1/2 hour, no muss, no fuss!

I had to include this cute little Bunnies Bag from antiquebasketlady. In my sewn-goods store customdesigns4ubynan I've been making children's dresses lately, so this caught my eye. I'm styling baby fashionistae!
For a more adult, evening look I found this darling Hot Pink Night Out Purse from awildtonic. My sister and I drove out there from New York, missing the big nor'easter last weekend, and had beautiful weather the whole time we were in MI. Of course the bride is lovely. Here she is being escorted to the altar by my brother, her father

She was preceded by the flower girl, my great-niece Madeline, who didn't quite understand her function, and needed help from her father:

The ceremony was outside, as you can see, under a tent, on a farm in Ann Arbor called Cobblehill Farm. There was a petting zoo with a friendly goat, a horse and assorted chickens and roosters, who didn't interfere at all with the wedding. Afterward the vows

That handsome lucky young man is her new husband, back from Iraq for a whole year. They live in Hawaii now, where he is stationed. He just looks too young to be an officer in the US Army!
Ah, what a lovely day it was, and a wonderful party!customdesigns4ubynanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07556208452341781780noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1927065756964435066.post-66454143662816145762010-10-01T12:21:00.000-07:002010-10-01T12:21:26.230-07:00MOVING OUTDue to circumstance beyond my control, like losing my job in Feb 2009, I need to sell my apartment. I plan to move back to Michigan, where I was brought up and my parents still live. I am moving to MI because of my parents, and because the rents there are in-line with the maintainance charges I currently pay on my studio apartment in NY. After doing research, I discovered I can rent a nice 1 bedroom apt in a complex with a pool, gym, community space, laundry facilities, etc. etc. and so forth. Sounds really good, and when I go to MI for my niece's wedding in a couple of weeks, I plan to stay and look at these places that seem so good on the internet. We shall see what we shall see...

Meanwhile, my realtor inspected my current space and said "Do you have any storage facilities?" Hint, hint...your place is TOO CLUTTERED!!!! Like I didn't know that already. Time to do some housecleaning and get this stuff out of here!!!! I have bolts of fabric in everycorner. Let's just look at three of them:

This is my bedroom corner:

I have a small dressing room. These are the left and right corners of that space:

I love these fabrics. In the immediate picture above, you see the yellow and white flower material? Custom Designs by Nancy (my other shop) has a fabulous commission to make center table toppers for a woman's wedding this spring, and I will be using this stuff, and hopefully some binding tape from ShastaCreations. Otherwise, if you see something you like, let me know and I'll tell you all about it!

Thankfully I saved the sleeves all this material came in, so I put all those bolts into sleeves and cleaned out those corners. Hooray!
In case you're wondering about the paintings on the walls, my great-grandmother and my grandmother were both artists. My grandmother did paintings of everyone, and when she died we each got our own pictures. I also took one of my great-grandmother's paintings, too.
It is sterling silver with an obsidian stone in a bezel setting, made to order in your size! How excellent is that! When I'm shopping for jewelry - well, window shopping, really, these days - I look for sterling silver, solid gold, or platininum. On the platinum, after all, I'm just window shopping...the point is, I can't wear copper, or stainless steel, or aluminum. I have tried, and it's just itch itch itch, little tiny bumps, scratch scratch scratch. I'm also looking for excellent workmanship. I want beautiful craftsmanship and high quality. This pattern must have been inspired by the British Empire in India rather than the exuberant English garden roses, like this piece:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 275px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoeIro04iuJwx3bL6hEqgLRJP7QmGPb0TxYwxtd7e8obhFxdhSmOuXze-ZNIjq0ZI0tgNlNqExgOnK85yuDr9ENkaUzMgPG9abERVvSO3WKIkhY-Fxm6Z3IknvF56IZ1t0NZLlWO8IzEP0/s400/EVASHAM+ROSE+5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5507524938218523650" />

And then, while I was digging around (you have no idea how much material I have and where I stash it in my studio apartment) I discovered this Lee Jofa Book of discontinued patterns by David Hicks for Ashley Hicks. David Hicks was an innovative English interior designer who died in 1998. His son Ashley is now working with Lee Jofa/Kravet and designing new lines of fabrics and carpets, combining David Hicks' strong geometry and colors in a new softer, gentler sensibility for the modern market. This book of now discontinued patterns contains 5 different patterns each in 5 different colors, for a total of 25 pieces of cloth bound at the top, and with paper labels describing each piece, including fibre content.

<img style="float:left; The company is actually three companies that over a century have merged and now comprise Lee Jofa. The oldest company was founded by an Englishman, George Johnson, in 1823 as a rope maker for ships in New York harbor. I know, amazing, isn't it? How do you get from making ropes to making gorgeous luxury fabrics? From ropes for ships they expanded into horsehair for sofas during the 19th century, and from there, after partnering with Mr. Faulkner, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Faulkner (which became JOFA) imported and sold fine fabrics.

Later, in 1888, Arthur Lee began his company in England. Using innovative weaving techniques developed during the Industrial Revolution, he produced high quality fabrics for discriminating customers who disdained the cheap cloth produced by other companies. Both companies, JOFA and Arthur H. Lee and Sons remained in business until 1965, when Arthur H. Lee bought JOFA. Their combined names became Lee Jofa, and they continued to import and produce some of the most luxurious fabrics available.

In 1995 Lee Jofa was acquired by Kravet, Inc., a leader in products for the interior design industry. As a Kravet employee, I toured the New York City Lee Jofa showroom, which was MARVELOUS. We had a small lecture and discussion about production techniques around the world, and held 19th century wood blocks that were used to hand print fabrics. It's amazing to think of people handling these large, heavy blocks of carved wood, and printing precise patterns on textiles. (While researching for this blog post I came across this article by Bess Darnley describing her experiments making wood blocks and printing fabrics, which is very interesting.) Many of the original prints from JOFA and Arthur Lee are in archives, and are being re-worked for modern production while maintaining the integrity of the exuberance and spirit of the 19th and 20th century prints. So colorful! Such fantastic patterns! And the quality can be seen and felt. These are not cheap knock-off fabrics that will fall apart after one cleaning. Properly cared for, these fabrics can become heirlooms; that beautiful pillow can be passed onto your children.

You can purchase Lee Jofa fabrics online. Here is one site, and a sample of their offerings. You can see the typical pricing of these gorgeous high quality luxurious fabrics:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmeTjDSAi8TJWXp6X9NhZ9yHLr0xvrqYT_FooUztYFY6GEx1655tQJoiIBA44q2DoXQ4KY8Hw8f7E5FG0sMwesZji0D2bVCunJD5MZwtCyRz-fvSEbBvOPpSSl601vkHeoqAKL501Aa385/s320/Lee-Jofa-Fabric-LJ-2000149-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504945244170815634" />

On nancysfabricshop I am currently offering four pieces of discontinued patterns, including Evasham Rose and Ainsleigh Rose:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 282px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGuA52RZctb9xKLM5WE4Q7YCRPVR-sh_nogMzw8_ovi8idwof2FUFeX6z0aBv64143R7ARwBSfSfRW803K7_N4KZgpFkLBefte1XtBz5tJr0bLYxLGWK-tXulhtejHvtrqjCuWCEDA5us0/s320/EVASHAM+ROSE+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504946466994770914" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 272px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0Ap_UFjRtfCFHhsNHYsMH0Gy8Ya8DEJKJBwf_zlr_qUFUIGKqfXJ2y_VETsjW5Ag8llA73VBNnleAWhOCfLA1jS12MNApT2xooDS9fw87aekCtB3z3dLDm7W5dauk-PAbURMOBS7QOscE/s320/AINSLEIGH+ROSE+5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504946459750430322" />

I am sorry I only have these small pieces, but they are extremely reasonably priced and will make something lovely for you and your home. I support a wonderful organization called Best Friends who run a huge facility for lost, abandoned, problem animals (dogs, cats, horses, rabbits - lots of different animals) on a ranch out west, and they prefer the term "community cats" rather than stray or feral, and promote the community to help these animals.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 280px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8oi_K1fcgZgoz7B9ZtQvx-U9jHX2lkqdPMY1R6zRsbiMfYtgr1y6rdl1V_gK_i9ywTlvbVj75_5kziw3Xv9xLxOkteqdbN8Cg7E0AG1Q4YENcv1_-U8M0HtzRRZSfqzlPMdJnQzBE5uED/s320/3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495739822692100258" />

There are four cats who live across the street from my apartment building, next to the post office, in a parking lot of a school. There are several women, including myself, who help take care of this little pride. I met these other women while bringing food to the cats, and learned they REALLY take care of this pride, and have spent hundreds of dollars on trapping, spaying and neutering, and other health issues. When the cats are ready to be released - they cannot be domesticated - their ears are clipped so the animal is marked as being spayed. Me, I just bring food, and was amazed at the dedication of these women.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 262px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrzSq3olBVbO-0-MzXOGypjtHPp_lUmpCg0CV6TskB-BLWjZJQBmwoISqw2WO6xu0WcCEXhv-hu3XhRdT-7gP9cKYGtd-O8KvZKDNptiX3KFS4rd7v5rRQK_jCBPElECK1nmKkME6qe41u/s320/6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495741934105547522" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 287px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiixRxmQgIxkri9YIIooWhf-2TRQ2xLSpQPFeZWhINcF_xVb22Md_sw8QkdAaDRQRcNXEtvS436N1_-yzqaqouZxw8Eu_C8YcN8Yb9jAX5oa0Xr3QUeuLIgSUYt1FpQzhoEsyo-nY3yNnmr/s320/12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495741923284441778" />

There is one old male I call Tomcat that incredibly is still alive. He is the leader of this little pride, and is dearly loved by one black female and two of his offspring, which I believe are both female also. I wish I could take better care of old Tom. When I was talking to the other women they told me the vet did as much as he could for him, cleaned him up, treated wounds, did medical stuff on his eyes, and he looked pretty good for a minute. Now of course, he looks awful. He knows me now, and lets me get somewhat close to him, within a couple of feet while I'm putting out his food, but he will never let me touch him. Poor ol' Tom.

If there are cats in your neighborhood, try to take care of them. Get them neutered and spayed so they can't reproduce, make a shelter so they have protection from rain and weather, monitor their health so they don't spread diseases. It isn't necessary to kill them, all life needs to live its life, but we can try to make another's life as comfortable as possible, and food is the best gift you can give. All religions say so. Being able to feed another being is a gift from God. You know all the gods will bless you when you feed another being, even the strays in your neighborhood.customdesigns4ubynanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07556208452341781780noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1927065756964435066.post-64719819986328710832010-07-14T12:14:00.000-07:002010-07-14T13:15:10.615-07:00Shipping ChargesYes, yes, shipping charges, that forgotten expense. You find something online you want to buy, then realize the shipping charges are as much and sometimes MORE than the cost of the item!!! What's up with that???!!!

I'll tell you what's up with that for my shops, Nancy's Fabric Shop and Custom Designs by Nancy. I learned the hard way how the shipping expenses can reduce my profit to nothing, and sometimes even go into negative territory, after I did the math. First, my goods are heavy. The shipping isn't minimal as it can be for jewelry, it can be quite serious, especially when sending a comforter or bedspread. And then there are the etsy and paypal fees. Etsy may only charge $.20 to list, and 3.5% doesn't sound like a lot until you do the math on a $50 piece, which is $1.75, plus the .$20 and paypal's fee and we're over $2.00 in fees and I haven't packaged and shipped it yet.

I know there's always a lot of discussion in the forums about how to price your pieces. I want to be competitive, and to tell the truth my material costs are minimal. In Custom Designs by Nancy I want to be paid for my labor. Even simple potholders or placemats can take time to make, and my etsy stores ARE my day job. So I use the shipping charges to pay the etsy and paypal fees, figure about $.60 for the packaging (envelopes or box), and guesstimate how much the post office will charge to ship to Alabama (whereever) from New York.

For example, I sent a potholder to Georgia in May. The potholder itself sold for $5 and I charged her $2 for shipping. The actual post office cost was $1.56, the envelope cost maybe $.30, the paypal fee was $.50, the list fee was $.20 and etsy's 3.5% was $.18, totalling a$2.74. So, out of the $7 she was charged, I actually received $4.25, and it took maybe 1/2 hour to make the potholder.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 302px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlCnqFUwEZY1H0omdJitRbrHpZOZEV-GMh6k0HlQdaCtFm8mi3dI6dUNYJarfiCrcNc-vT5BxxcMvcNhOfuelq5S_xtYLvZcfUCwksz7Q-xLpQgRHXVh5w5ZThviuRQeFMZ7xBZ69v2Ls4/s320/BLUE+AND+WH+LAV3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493850725529740738" />

I don't mean for this to sound like a rant. Little did I know I would have to open a new google account and a new paypal account, which meant I needed to open a new checking account as well! And all on a hot Sunday. Whew! All because a lovely patient woman wanted to buy one of my fabric pieces,

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 312px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrxb83jE7KNYGQz8bWqdNPQurOiZC6vKvDH6WysVaV59mNbC_r7y-oyVrrMQPYXtF6DIvPllcnzk1ve3cjjECd_ikbbUj4Gcazaj1sFSFbIcT_YFoJo1CdnaAB8ggmEeByLFmNJwy6QzaQ/s320/THISTLE+TAPESTRY+5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493063323495848466" />

and her paypal payment did not get into my existing paypal account, connected with Custom Designs by Nancy. Thank goodness I already have an online savings account, and was able to call them and quickly establish a checking account with them. Of course, then she had to cancel the original payment, and resubmit so it would register in my new paypal account. Oh my, but all's well that ends well, as the bard said. This has sure been a learning experience for me, and I hope you will learn from this little episode, too. At least now I'm set up completely (cross my fingers) to do business as Nancy's Fabric Shop!

And just in time for Christmas in July! From now to the end of July take 10% off any piece in either of my stores! I will adjust the price as purchases are made, and we should have no issues with paypal!customdesigns4ubynanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07556208452341781780noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1927065756964435066.post-85806587543218727962010-07-09T07:21:00.000-07:002010-07-09T08:16:39.935-07:00SunbrellaLet me tell you about Sunbrella fabric, the copywrited name of a high-quality functional fabric manufactured by Glen Raven Mills in South Carolina. Using a high-tech process, Glen Raven produces a unique proprietary acrylic fiber that is designed to be sun-fast and fade resistant, the perfect outdoor fabric for your boat, patio and decks. Extemely durable, Sunbrella fabrics far exceed the lifetime expectancy of conventional cotton canvas. Also, Glen Raven Mills is recognized as an environmentally conscious company by The Skin Cancer Foundation and Greenguard for the sun protection the fabric offers, and for being a very low emitting interior product.

Often used to make awnings, umbrellas and ATV covers, I made tablecloths which are great on a picnic table, or spread on the grass while you're at an outdoor concert.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 169px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCk3U842MjLJeOi5C60ECiV-YyayXl3oU59j3OXWpSPNem7C1K7f-vSKOs9LRjXnf9VkyLA4D9ONJEASiokbNHdf4B50_TmAW6_HBoBeW575vbrrWncpJeK-zSB6_LmT-c2KIOW8g5guQz/s320/SUNBRELLA.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491919397111424114" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgZg14WtQrwh89usJLPBWZnfggUnT0az0uiML0gF1bfl9LJRNSYKLY10QDOxYYriPiOeQBY5Vk9orEQpVF8Y-zq6QqYFJkzsQTfvSyoZkUjiEwx3vWCwYRv822qqKtmHIYLF4m2qdvesmk/s320/SUNBRELLA+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491919391716229026" />

I have several pieces of Sunbrella for sale in my shop, all around a yard long and 54" wide. I will be discussing fabrics and showing off my extensive collection, for sale at Nancy's Fabric Shop on etsy. I used to work at a well-known distributor of gorgeous fabrics to the interior design industry, and as an employee I had access to their overstock and discontinued designs, which I collected and sewed into various pieces like bedspreads, tablecloths and pillows, which I sell on my other etsy store, Custom Designs by Nancy. However, I can't sew fast enough to consume this MOUNTAIN of materials around my little studio apartment, so in the interest of de-stashing, I am offering my fabrics to you, for your projects.

Here are a few pieces I have for sale right now, ready to ship. First, some lovely silk embroideries:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFN8x4kZEqaI9FxhtdTvaWGvl1UWqswuaOFNj1wURhCFF2UQfTeGO-8eAUpWZTyScASf9szWoJiqorgJf0Mv1_1Nfc6RG7B8lr1EFMNOxoSH-sxAnlOq-seYN3N_7Tj6BcEiBdHYqa84MS/s400/WHITE+SILK+EMB+4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491595265065301858" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 255px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9EaXg9ZiydW-ycICcBYmqgU8czc2xKNh1VSHKW02mnLCLhdi2UoLlrEwnVc6rSeNse1EcuKkao4AvJlm6iIBn2n3RhUCmGyXh_nVEQ99t4WLyVsdZnOKZeNzFul7ZZ0Vbih-2qLYXGLs2/s400/GREEN+SILK+EMB+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491595262653972994" />

I also have tapestries, which I love:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 331px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwMNJ7P0eL-3s70evWjuxc1wwyohszClC2zzNA8gssge-G5EUebsm7FTPhjr-vFF90sqDdggoCPQd8uAOk0UMbgLZ6Duqnpy7zr_t0jt_ZByRprbbjiN0cHS1oFCxbvJQqc7c3WNUuYfYf/s400/PEACOCK+TAPESTRY.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491596404936193378" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 372px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4AfGNF5XCCGWBS7FChMwcxvNG7bPtj5AmfTn3rKYi10HyASrZjrQkFN7k2bgguokmnwxsy8-T14hjtSbd1dKYlFPsRIDj-5NmH7jMN3ATOqp4IqAeO0vrMOdLtR-mqAxIb316t1oKhRxF/s400/DOGS+AND+RABBITS.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491596396242912322" />

and lots of pretty flowers:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 383px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkLWl4-AAH8zrGiIuRQuhGwnUO8TlavAsxxhLDdgq1ZFSrVe4_F7wmjP-zSJ1fP38BhiFYNZNw4uEzMIWVSIz3ykvCnF3b_T57STg-2-00oLOzd191YumJ2ejA6cnnvabpZhfdAfndVOP1/s400/LEE+JOFA+CASTLETON+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491597236650649442" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 377px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5GaVgeDARbpU2SdaRvfhnDBvVYzfjK4ropoU9C013l0pS7hLHRsfFAg_6rqVKkx5kwZkoAnEUfhJH6mFuBmjfZA51_vay5CETmYiGgH6H6eePE_CcJQzCN6Emk9S0KjhoDPRjKxVP6d8n/s400/BLUE+BROCADE.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491597229435793810" />

These are all quality goods, manufactured around the world, at very competitive prices.
